Nanning Bridge – UHPC Expansion Joint Rapid Repair
Project Overview
Nanning Bridge is a key traffic corridor connecting the eastern part of Nanning to the city center and the urban expressway network. To keep traffic disruption to a minimum, the expansion joint repair and replacement work was carried out under a fast-track schedule using UHPC rapid-setting concrete to achieve early strength and reliable performance in demanding site conditions.
Project Facts
Location: Nanning, Guangxi, China
Structure length: approx. 1,314.773 m
Main bridge length: approx. 300 m
Application: Expansion joint rapid replacement / patch repair
Material solution: Rapid Setting Concrete (UHPC rapid repair mix)
Work mode: Night maintenance with quick reopening target (fast-track delivery)
Challenge
Expansion joints on busy bridges are exposed to repeated dynamic loads, water ingress, and temperature movement. Repair work usually faces three constraints at the same time:
very limited closure windows,
tight early-opening requirements, and
strict durability expectations at the joint edge (where cracking and spalling often start).
Solution: Rapid-Setting Concrete for Expansion Joint Repairs
For this project, rapid-setting concrete was selected to support quick placement and early strength gain, helping the team complete joint-area repairs efficiently while maintaining quality. The mix is designed for bridge and highway maintenance where speed and reliability matter—especially for overnight works and short shutdown periods.
Typical Work Process (On-Site)
Removal & preparation: Remove deteriorated concrete around the joint; clean and mechanically prepare the substrate.
Detailing: Repair/align expansion joint components as required; protect adjacent surfaces.
Mixing: Mix rapid-setting concrete according to the specified water ratio; keep batch size aligned with workable time.
Placement: Place and compact the material to fully fill edge zones and anchor areas around the joint.
Finishing: Finish surface profile and texture to match surrounding deck and ensure smooth traffic transition.
Curing & reopening: Apply appropriate curing measures based on temperature and wind conditions; reopen to traffic once required early performance is reached.
Result
The fast-track method supported efficient construction progress and helped shorten the disruption period for a critical bridge corridor. The repaired joint area achieved a clean finish and improved edge integrity, supporting safe reopening and continued service under traffic loading.
